For shame!  How can they justify to themselves what they have been doing?!

Corruption investigation in New Jersey snares three mayors, two state legislators and several rabbis

These “rabbis” (up until now I wouldn’t have put it in quotes, I would have respected their smichah [rabbinic ordination], although they probably would have trouble with mine) appear to belong to a community which is known for a “holier-than-thou” approach to Jews and Judaism, not to mention the rest of the world.  (No, not all Chasidim, and not Chasidic Judaism at its best.  But it is a known problem.)

If you stop believing that others are human just like you, that they are created b’tselem Elohim, in the image of the Divine, just like you, then you find it easier to tread a path that leads you to treat those people in ways you would not tolerate being treated yourself.  To disregard laws and rules made by them.  And, the most horrible to me, to disregard the very rules that you hold most sacred — rules right in the Torah, not to mention in the 2,000-year tradition of interpretation that you hold just as sacred! — just because … well, I don’t know.  Maybe just because you think that they only apply to you and “your kind”?
