Youth Education

Congregation Berith Sholom operates the Jewish Community School at Berith Sholom to offer Jewish education to students from Kindergarten through seventh grade in a warm, welcoming and creative environment.

Our students come from all over the Capital Region, and small class sizes allow for individualized instruction and close, personal attention.

We pride ourselves in teaching our students how to do mitzvahs (good deeds/responsibilities) and help the community inside and out of the classroom. Students learn about the values of tzedakah (ensuring the basic well-being of others by sharing what we have), tikkun olam (the obligation to repair the world, to leave it better than we found it), and chesed (a culture of kindness). These values are infused into all aspects of the school community and educational programming.

The curriculum focuses in age-appropriate ways on religious education, including Jewish customs and practices; values and ethics; Hebrew and prayer; holidays and symbols; Bible and history; the diversity of the Jewish community and our complicated relationship with Israel.

Most students celebrate Bar-Bat-B Mitzvah. All students learn basic synagogue skills, preparing them to connect with Jewish community wherever they go.  Listen to prayer recordings here.

JKids Story Time

JKids Storytime is a video program for children ages 2-5. Children  use their imaginations, learn stories, sing songs, explore major Jewish holidays, and develop a love of learning.

JKids Storytime is led by Morah Elana, who has a MS in education with a concentration in early childhood who teaches Pre-K at Temple Israel in Albany, NY. Her lively and interactive Story Time videos include Shabbat, Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot, Chanukah, Tu B'Shvat, Purim, Pesach, and Israel Independence Day.

We're a place of justice and warmth and action as much as we are a place of worship.

[After attending Berith Sholom], I honestly saw a whole different way of looking at Judaism. I began to understand that there is no one way to Jewish.
